My heart goes out to all of you in 2/8 and your sons were loading up on those buses to deploy with the 26 MEU.

Cpl. Loren Jones waited Thursday morning for word that it was time to load the buses.

The machine gunner with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment was among 800 Marines and sailors who departed from Camp Lejeune for a six-month deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. By this weekend, that number will reach approximately 2,200.

Marine keeps convoys secure

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq (Aug. 12, 2006) -- Cpl. Daniel M. Dresch is a man with his head on a swivel.

Dresch, a 21-year-old security force commander from Colombia, S.C., is the man making the call for his Marines when it comes to shoot or don’t shoot. It’s a role that demands complete awareness, quick decisions and nerves of steel. It’s also a job that he knows keeps his Marines safe on Iraq’s roads.

You must've had some anxiety when he told you about this incident. Glad he's doing well and, yes, their courage, loyalty, and desire to be with the guys is very inspiring!

I believe that this is the article you were talking about, Gretchen. If you click on the original link to the article, there will be a "multimedia" slide show, narrated by the author of the article. You'll have to go there for the link, can't seem to link some of those multimedia pieces directly. (**note**--some of the photos do show an injured Marine and are quite graphic)

The photojournalist is Joao Silva.

Waiting for the ghost's next move

The bullet passed through Lance Corporal Juan Valdez- Castillo as his patrol moved down a muddy urban lane. It was a single shot. The marine fell against a wall, tried to stand and fell again. His squad leader, Sergeant Jesse Leach, faced where the shot had come from, raised his rifle and grenade launcher and quickly stepped between the sniper and the bloodied marine. He walked backward, scanning, ready to fire.
