For discussions of the book Once a Warrior Wired for Life by Dr. Bridget Cantrell and Chuck Dean. All posts are moderated.
Recommended Reading for ALL families, Marines and Healthcare Professionals From the Founder, Tracy Della Vecchia I picked up this book last night and read it in full, in one sitting, cover to cover. I knew it would be a quality book and hoped it would give me additional insight for families that call the office with questions and concerns about their sons and daughters returning from combat and transitioning out of the Marine Corps. The book was beyond my expectations. I finally "get it". I finally understand that our sons and daughters will all have a tough time returning to civilian life--they don't have to have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or COS (Combat Operational Stress) to have concerns about returning home and adjusting back to a civilian lifestyle. And I understand why now. That knowledge and understanding will help me help other families, and most importantly, help me to help my son. The authors, Dr. Bridget Cantrell and Chuck Dean, (also of the critically acclaimed book on PTSD, Downrange to Iraq), have once again written a self-help guide that will assist the families of Warriors understand "why" the civilian world is tough for anyone who has been in combat (downrange). The book will guide the Warrior through different scenarious, validate the feelings and emotions and difficulties they face at homecoming, and provide them with practical, useful suggestions for living life as a civilian. The authors take this one step further by encouraging our Warriors to make good use of their military skills outside the military--yes, even infantrymen have skills and qualities that will be useful in civilian professions. Once a Warrior: Wired for Life should be required reading for military personnel from the privates to the commanding officers, for every family member, and for anyone in the healthcare profession treating or talking with military personnel and veterans from current conflicts and past conflicts. Buy the book, read it, pass it on, and encourage others to do the same. Share the knowledge you will learn from it. This is the best way I know to support our troops.

I look forward to talking with families about the book! |

| Tracy, I heartily add my "thumbs up" on this book. I was just getting ready to send the info to many Marine families of 3/5 who have been involved in three deployments. There is so much uplifting, good information in this book! I have bought three books-one for my son who is continues to serve in the Marines, one for a local counselor, a former Vietnam Vet,and one for us, the parents, to better understand what our young heroes have experienced and are trying to process. It's a GREAT READ! |

Indeed Gayle, and thanks for sharing the book with the other 3/5 families.
Derrick has now read the book--and truly feels it will make a difference in his life.
Pat, "during" deployment, I found it was tough to read books about what they "go through" while over there. However, one book that was just incredible for me, and to this day, I highly recommend it to anyone, is "A Table in the Presence" by Lt. Carey H. Cash. Lt. Cash is a navy chaplain that was with the 1/5 Marines in 2003. This book shares the incredible stories of this battalion and how God was with them. It's a great book for deployment.
Lt. Cash is now on our board of directors. He was a speaker at our 2006 Conference in Houston. He is now stationed in Naples, Italy with his family. My husband is from Italy and his family is all in Naples. We'll be going to visit my mother-in-law and his family this December. I'm hoping to hook up with Lt. Cash at that time as well. |

Yes, I agree. "A Table in the Presence" is another outstanding book. I just sent my (Ben's) autographed book to him/Camp Pendleton this week. After much underlining and rereading it, it seemed more than time to get it to the rightful owner. ;o) BTW, Tracy, if you do have the good fortune of meeting up with Lt Cash and his family in Italy, tell him this Marine family sends our blessings and prayers. My mom and I had the good fortune to sit with Lt Cash at one of the meals during the 2006 Convention. He really touched our hearts with his sincere caring, his stories, his love of God, family, and country. |

Gayle, I will pass that on to Lt. Cash. I know he'll be thrilled to hear it.
Are the books (OAW) arriving in good shape? |

Tracy, you said it well!!! Now I get it. I haven't had to deal with my son readjusting to civilian life yet but there are so many things in the book that I see my husband doing (and my ex). Like in a restaurant, sitting looking at the door, never with his back to the door!!! (still in the military mode of protection). Both of these men are not huggers, still have the "Wire" up even after 30-40 years. There is also a wonderful chapter on how to deal with younger children. I will definately put this one away for Michael to read. |

One of the best books I've ever read on this topic ever! It describes what I've been feeling to a tee. It's an outstanding book. Every parent who's Marine has been there should read this, (about a month before they come home) and send it to your Marine ahead of coming home too. Read it at least twice. It explains a lot of 'why' in the relationship problems we have. The Marine's family needs to be careful and heed the warnings in this book. The book is intense. You have to take breaks from reading.
