Is it finished yet? How'd it go? We're here cheering you on!

I wonder if they have that obstacle that my Marine got an inch long splinter through his thumbnail in boot? It looks like the women's gymnastics uneven parallel bars, except made of wood. Wow, doing the MCM is nothing! If I did the Boot Camp Challenge, I'd probably hurt myself and cry like a little girl (according to my Marine, the DI's make statements like that, but a bit more "colorful")!

Well we made it through!! WOW! What an AMAZING experience! Nanette, Mario, Jack and I all made it out alive! What a fabulous group of people to be associated with - I could not have asked for more incredible folks to participate with than Nanette, Mario and Jack!!! Of course, they were in better running form than me by a long shot - but even bringing up the rear in this group was a real honor. Being raised by and with Marines in my home, I've always had deep respect for them, but WOW after this experience, that respect just shot up about 1000 fold!! What we participated in was but a very tiny fraction of what our amazing young men and women experience for 13 WEEKS! The DI's were in true form but probably a bit toned down for us - it could be intimidating though. Just knowing they were along the way to "encourage" us, made this old girl step up the pace as I approached the obstacles.....haha. What a great event prior and post also! Neat festival atmosphere which kinda dulled the pain after the fact (loved the 10 minute massage before the race) We'll send along photos as we get them all together. If anyone wants to write and ask me about it, please feel free! My advice: Get is shape EARLY and stick with it - this is no picnic but it can be done! Give it a shot, sign up for next year, get your mind in it, too - it's a mental game as well as physical! GO FOR IT FOLKS! Although I probably didn't make a pretty sight and was really sucking wind towards the end - I DID IT and nobody can take that away from me! I'm 51 years old and darn I'm proud of myself! You can do it too! Lots of Love again to Nanette, Mario, Jack and our official photo journalist, Kathy (Jack's wife) what a wonderfully caring group of people who I will never forget!!

Hey, it takes time to recover! Even with the training and extra beer we managed to complete the course. the 4 of us met for dinner the night before and got to know each other. The 10 pound burrito might have slowed me down some but the DI's never got near me. Two of us managed to draw a little blood but it was so neat just to participate. Mario represented the 2/1 with style and Nannette ran the whole thing with I think was a smile. Jennifer got hit by a bus part way through but i think the scar won't show too much. I learned the right way to go over the horizontal rails after the first sloppy attempt. and i thought the nutcracker was only an opera. So we had fun and even though we didn't win any prizes we won some new friends and the bragging rights of completing the run. It was well done and the DI's were great. I ran behind the SgtMajor for awhile and he was encouraging everyone as he went. He then ran away from me at a steady pace that left me behind. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a fun challenge. I expect to see everyone next year. Old Jack

Oh you guys!!! Thanks for the stories!!! Im grinning ear to ear right now. The Boot Camp Challenge is one of the funnest events I have ever done and I hope more folks will take you up on the challenge to give it a try.

Jennifer, tell me about your goose egg on your head/getting hit by the bus.

Jack...I would ask for more nutcracker details but well.... nevermind. How fun to run behind the Sgt Major!

Getting in shape early is great advice. I think almost anyone can do this.....you just need to make the commitment to do the event and plan your work then WORK your plan!

Im so glad you had BEER afterwards (I never skip that very important step) and got together for some team building/bonding. Experiencing this with friends makes it so much more memorable!

Thank you ALL for your hard work and fund raising efforts. YOU GUYS DID AWESOME!!! Jack, Nannette and Mario I hope you realize that there will be lots of smiling faces in Iraq when LOTS of Marines are opening care packages because of your hard work.

Jennifer, the families at Bethesda are so very appreciative of the meal program provided by Purple Heart Family Support. Please know that your fundraising efforts mean so much to families coming together to share a meal and fellowship with others who are experiencing the same difficulties and fear as they wait at the bedside of their beloved Marine who was injured in combat.

This is important work folks, we can make a difference in the lives of our Marines and have some fun along the way PLUS reap the benefits of better health because of an exercise program.

Im just SO darn proud of all of you!!!!!

I don't think any of us had a lap top with us, and none of us returned home till Sunday after hours of travel. That is why you didn't hear from us on the day of the event. (And some of us were also licking our wounds!)

Mario and I had fun. Though I don't run as much as I used to, I do aerobic activity at the gym almost daily. Nonetheless, portions of the BCC were a struggle! The running wasn't a problem, but when you do the obstacles, that really increases the fatigue level! My knees were shaky by the time I got to the final mile, but I was dadgummed if I was going to not run the entire race!

I did skip one item--a jump off one of the log structures. I estimate it to have been a 6-foot drop to the ground. That seemed too much impact for my 57-year old knees, so I crawled backward down the hay bales and walked around the jump. I did complete the other less high jumps, sometimes landing on my hands and knees and sometimes on my arse. At one push-up station, I started doing my "girl" push-ups. Right away the DI yelled that I wasn't going to get away with that just because I was a girl; I was to do the push-ups the same way the Marines have to! I muttered, "Yes, Sir!" and hoped he wasn't counting these more difficult push-ups because I didn't do all of the ten I was told to do. Instead, I did about 8--all my trembling arms could manage--and then took off running! The next time I came to a push-up station, I very carefully chose a location as far away from the DI as possible. I hoped he wouldn't be paying attention to me, since there were at least 8 others doing push-ups at the same time. Then I proceeded to do 10 girl push-ups! I wasn't about to look at the DI, so I don't know if he saw and chose to say nothing, or if he just missed seeing my infraction!

Mario realized that he wasn't as in shape as he should have been--though he finished the course. Sometimes he ran, sometimes he walked(though, with a partial knee replacement, I'm glad he didn't run the whole time anyway). But he's vowing to train earlier and stick to a training regimen for next year's BCC! My Marine son wants to do the BCC next year too (he would have liked to have done it this year too, but he just had a new baby four weeks ago, and didn't want to take off and leave the mommy and baby behind). The hardest part for me was the jumping (the impact). I suppose I could train for that, but I am not sure I want to do a lot of jumping--even if it is training. But some kind of interval training with sprint work would probably be good to help one get ready for the varied pace of the race next time.

I really enjoyed meeting Jennifer, Jack and his wife, Kathy at the BCC. What a great bunch of people! We have made some new friends!

And, yes, the ten-minute free massage was great!

How fun and I know the challenge was great but you all did it with respectable finish times. Thank you!

I'd really like to take on the BCC, but I'm afraid I'd die of exertion while I'm out in front. That in and of itself is no biggie, but I do know that California has a thing about hazardous waste disposal. I have been studying spontaneous combustion, and that may be the key to future participation (at least once).

To USMCPOP next year you can run with me and my 10 pound burrito supplement. with your spontaneous combustion and my methane we would lite up the course.
By the way the home builders association just told me they are making a $500.00 donation to the care packages program. it pays to ask, i didn't even threaten them with no permits. That almost will put me even with nanser. We didn't really tear up the course but we did well with the fund raising. oldjack
