This article, even though it is posted on the page Tracy has linked above, deserves to be posted here, too. It has lots of info, talks about the process of mobilization, and states that those mobilized will be for forward positions.

Marine Reservists Involuntarily Recalled

WASHINGTON - The Marine Corps is recalling 1,800 reservists to active duty, citing a shortage of volunteers to fill some jobs in Iraq.

March 27, 2007

Members of the branch's Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) will get letters this week notifying them of plans to mobilize them involuntarily for a year, said Lt. Col. Jeff Riehl of Marine manpower and reserve affairs.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week approved the action, under which reservists would report for duty in October and deploy to Iraq early next year, Riehl said.

Hello , my name is Roberta ,I have a question . My son just finished his 4 years in aug. and now he is in Grad School .He was infantry 1/8 Bravo. He is listed as IRR and when he found out the marines were going to Afgan. he wanted to go with them. Can you pick your mission? Do you really need one yeat for training and deployment. He never had time to decompress and started school 3 weeks after being released from Active Duty.

Hi Roberta,
My son finished his four years in August as well. I have heard that they don't call you up from IRR in the first or the last year of IRR. I'm not sure if that is true, but for the Marines I know that have been called back it has been in the 2nd year of IRR.
I'm not sure how it works, I know of one person who was able to get back into his own unit. I know one other who joined the Reserves instead and one other who simply decided to re up. I would want my son to have as much training as possible before he went, especially if they are going to a new place.
If your son has questions on how this works, he may want to contact his recruiting office, I'll bet they can answer them.

Hi Sue, I remember some of you from deployment 2004. My son is going to call the Sgt.Major in charge of IRR to see if they can take him in april after classes finish. He feels he needs to go there so I will support him if it works out for him.

New IRR Recall.... Jan 21 2008.

Corps involuntarily activates 870 IRR members

By Kimberly Johnson - Staff writer
Posted : Monday Jan 21, 2008 18:13:21 EST

The Corps is reaching back into the Individual Ready Reserve this week to involuntary activate 870 Marines, most for duty in Iraq, service officials said.

The involuntary activations for the U.S. Central Command area of operations mark the third time since 2006 the service has tapped the Reserve pool to help fill billets taxed by frequent combat deployments.

The article does not solve the mystery - or speak to this Kansas City Muster. It's a general heads up article. I have done www. searches everyday looking for actual news about this muster and have found none- which is not a huge surprise- I have noticed, when the USMC doesn't want to release information to the press it doesn't.

****This is just my thought/opinion or experience on the matter- I speak for no one but myself and make only educated guesses based on 7 years of being the mother of a Marine and 9 million google searches.

I must say I have to agree with Katie...... You don't know what is going to happen to your son (Sgt. Anthony... no matter how old or big he gets he's still your baby) until it's in black and white with their name on it. The thought of not knowing is a feeling that I thought I could put behind me.... alas it is creeping into my soul......... From all that I have read and those I have talked to, it will be again a time for me to say good bye to my son................ Not a day has gone by that I have not thought about our men serving... Praying for their safe return. When Anthony came back from Iraq homecoming was fulled with such mixed emotions....... My heart felt that a weight was lifted yet it was heavy for the parents who's sons did not return.... We as parents do our best to protect our children from harm as they grow and then we must let them go. Just because they are Marines doesn't mean we don't want to protect them ....... We just have to leave it in God's hands.

Bigger Corps stops calling up IRR Marines

By Trista Talton - Staff writer
Posted : Sunday Aug 16, 2009 8:26:10 EDT

The Corps has stopped putting Individual Ready Reserve Marines on involuntary orders, phasing out recalls as the active-duty force has grown to 202,000.

A little more than 200 Marines who reported for duty in late spring are likely the last reservists to get involuntarily recalled, said Maj. Steven O’Connor, a spokesman at Marine Corps Headquarters.
