Loved ones of the 1/5..I am giving you a heads-up that I am sending in tomorrows mail 40 web cams (donated)..one for each computer the 1/5 has at FOB.

If you do not have a web cam you will still be able to view your Marine provided the following:

System requirements:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=products/details&contentid=7105&CRID=4&detail=2&countryid=19&languageid=1

You may want to consider purchasing a web cam ($39-$99) then they may be able to see you as well. I believe that Yahoo Messenger is what they use in Iraq on other cams presently. If you need more info please email me.

God bless the 1/5 and all our troops! Pray that our cams make it there safe too!

Pam,

If I may ask, who donated these webcams? I believe that whoever did made such a contribution deserves our support and admiration.

Pam,
If you would like to write a piece for the parents on 'how to' sign up their Marine and themselves for a Yahoo! account I would be happy to post it on the main information side of the web site for all to use.

This is just phenomenal! Thank you for spearheading this and getting it going for our 1/5 Marines! I too would like to acknowledge the company and/or individuals who donated the web cams.

God bless and semper fi,
Tracy

I don't think there are enough ways to express gratitude to those wonderful people who donated those cameras to our Marines. I have been able to use my camera for Patrick, but being able to see him would mean so much to me, as it would for all the other loved ones on this board to see their husbands, sons, brothers, boyfriends, and cousins. Having the cameras for any other units at the base will also be such a blessing to everyone back at home - please pass on my thanks to the "camera angels," and God bless.

Hi Tracy,

I have found that it is much simpler if the Marines sign themselves up for their Yahoo accounts, as they will be able to choose their own scrrennames and passwords, which will then prevent them from being found by unintended users.

If Pam is not able to, I would be happy to write up a piece detailing the registration process, program downloads, etc. Just let me know.

I did sign my son up...simply because he didn't have a lot of time and did not have an email address that he could check...so in our instance, that worked well.

I'd love to have instructions from whomever can get them to me! I know other parents will appreciate it as well. Thanks to all of you again!

Downloading and registering for a Yahoo!Messenger account:

1. Point your web browser to http://www.yahoo.com.
2. At about the center of the page, in the row labeled "Connect" click on the link named "Messenger."
3. In large print at the center of the page, you should see "Messenger 5.6 (pc) Is Now Available." Click on the blue text that reads "GET IT NOW."
4. A new page will begin to load, and a dialog box will appear, asking if you want to install and run Yahoo!Install Manager - click "Yes" at the bottom of the box, and the download will begin.
5. Another new page will load indicating that installation has started and will start automatically. The Install Manager will open a dialog box. Follow the prompts to install the Messenger onto your computer.
6. When the installation is complete, choose "Finish."
7. The messenger will automatically launch and display a small dialog box for Login. At the top of the box is an option for "Get a Yahoo! ID - click this. Follow the prompts in the next dialog box to create your new Yahoo! ID. Based on your name and location, the computer will suggest a few user names to you, which you can use, or you can choose "Create My Own" to pick your own username. You will also be prompted to create a password. You will also be prompted to choose a security question and answer, as well as provide your birthdate and current e-mail address. You can click the option to create a yahoo e-mail account based on your screenname, which is usually a good idea so your Marine won't have to memorize different screennames and addresses.
7. You will be prompted through a word verification process to check your web browser capabilities, and then reach a confirmation page. Follow the prompt at the bottom and you will be taken back to the login box, where your new username and password will already be entered for you.

If anyone would like additional instructions on how to add their Marine's user name, or start their own webcam (if they have one) please let me know. I am also on Yahoo, ID sundollsweetie, and can be contacted any time for any help.

Hope this helps!!!

Thank you Stephanie..for beating me to it. There are organizations out there that will provide if you ask. I also have a committment of an additional 20 computers, 10-15 phones, and 4 more web cams IF some officer from the 1/5 would request it....which I have requested they do many times...weeks before this mission.

It is so important for our Marines and their families to be in contact. This past week has been horrendous for all of us. I can not think of a better gift right now than the web cams.

If getting a web cam: For those with Windows XP operating system. I had a problem with installing the cam due to a glitch in the software. I did a yahoo search for problems installing Logitech web cams and was able to find the information I needed (download a fix).

That is such a wonderful donation to our Marines! To all the parents who will benefit from this...let us remember the company who so graciuosly donated these products and send them letters of thank you...or better yet go out this weekend and purchase some Logitech products! Help those who help us and our boys!

I personally will toss my microsoft mice in the trash and purchase new Logitech versions this weekend!

THANK YOU LOGITECH (and the Marine parent who made this happen!) from a very grateful Marine father.

To all I have a question. I signed my son up to a hotmail account which he should have by now. But will these work with the hotmail account or should I do a yahoo? Or are they the same thing?

If anyone knows this please let me know. Again thank you Murgirl- this is really such a boost for our morale! I thank you.

I have hotmail also, but I am going to go ahead and get a Yahoo account, too. Just in case! (I don't know that much about this stuff, either)

Hotmail accounts are set up through MSN.com (Microsoft). This is an e-mail account. To use the web cam you need to sign up for their service MSN Messenger. It is an IM type program also...similar to Yahoo messenger. Web cams will work with that as well.

Be sure to sign him up for a MSN Messenger account as well...you too!. You will need one to converse with him or see the web cam video.

Again...much like yahoo...just run through MSN.

Have fun!

Travis, If you are using Hotmail then you have to sign up for MSN Messenger, its the equivalent of Yahoo messenger. You really need a DSL or equivalent internet connection for the cameras to work with the instant messenger. 56K dial-up modems are too slow. The Marines have a fast broadband connection where they are. I just signed up for Roadrunner, which is $40 a month. Prices vary between $30 - $70 a month for the service. Then you're always connected and you can leave the Messenger on all the time. When your Marine logs in, it will alert you and you can do a live face to face chat, pretty terrific.
Hope this helps

Nick,

I believe the best way to go from Iraq regarding the web cams is Yahoo Messenger and I do believe you need some sort of high speed connection.

Hello everyone!!! I am new to the site. I am so glad I found it. My name is Dorothy but I go by Dortie. My husband and I are farely new proud parents of a son who has been a Marine for 13 months. Our son was deployed to Iraq on August 25, 2004. He is with the CSSG-15 from Camp Pendleton. He has recently moved (please do not post movement locations) somewhere. I wanted to share my experience with using the Web Cam. It was so bittersweet and very emotional to see my son and yes I went and bought one for $20 so he could see me. I can tell you it has helped calm me down since I have seen him and to know that he is okay. He looked really good. But what I learned about him being able to use the web cam that day with me really disturbed me. I got to spend about 31/2 hours with him but it cost him a pretty penny. Where he is at he has to pay $5 an hour to use instant messenger and $45 an hour to use the web cam. This was on the base where he is at. I felt awful after learning this bit of news. I thinks it's great that web cams are being donated to your boys. I wish I new how to check and see what I could do for the men and women where my son is at.

Good Morning,
NEED HELP

My son is with 5/11 Tango. According to him, many of the marines have lap top. Knowing that, I bought him one for his birthday (Oct). He's in California at the present time but he will be deployed by December (according to him - still unknown).
Questions:
1.0 Do marines carry their lap top abroad (Iraq)?
2.0 How should I set up his lap top so that he is able to use it from abroad?
3.0 Are there areas that they can plug in for internet(I have SBC - DSL and will be installing the software in his computer)?
4.0 Are there areas to re-charge the batteries?

Your help will be appreciated.

Regards,
Dilza
